How to Write a Project Abstract (with a Nigerian Student Template)
The abstract is the first thing your examiner reads and often the last thing you write. It should summarise your entire project in 200 to 300 words. This guide gives you a fill-in template you can use directly.
What an abstract must contain
1. The problem the project addresses (1-2 sentences). 2. The aim and methodology used (1-2 sentences). 3. The key findings or output (2-3 sentences). 4. The conclusion or contribution (1-2 sentences).
Fill-in template
'This project addresses [PROBLEM]. The aim of the study was to [AIM]. Using [METHODOLOGY], data was collected from [SOURCE] and analysed using [TOOL]. The results showed that [FINDINGS]. The study concludes that [CONCLUSION] and recommends [RECOMMENDATION].'
Replace each bracketed placeholder with one or two clear sentences from your own work.
Common mistakes
- Do not cite references in the abstract. - Do not include figures or tables. - Do not exceed 300 words. - Do not use future tense ('this project will...') — the work is already done by the time the abstract is read.
