Effect of Gamification on Student Engagement in Secondary School Classrooms

Measures how game-based learning elements affect engagement and test scores of secondary school students.

About this project

This study examines the effect of gamification — points, badges, leaderboards and timed challenges — on student engagement and academic performance in secondary school classrooms. Using an experimental group taught with gamified lessons and a control group taught conventionally, it measures engagement through observation schedules and compares post-test scores.

Chapters 1–5 outline

Chapter 1

Introduction: background to gamification in education, statement of the problem (student disengagement and poor retention plague conventional lecture-style teaching), aim and objectives, research questions, scope, significance of the study, and definition of terms.

Chapter 2

Literature Review: theoretical framework, review of related works on gamification in education, gaps in existing studies, and a summary positioning this project.

Chapter 3

Methodology / System Analysis and Design: true experimental design; engagement observation rubric; achievement tests. Includes data collection method, system requirements, use-case and architecture diagrams (or population, sample size, and instrument).

Chapter 4

Implementation and Results: comparison of engagement indices and mean scores between groups. Presentation of findings, testing, evaluation, and discussion of results.

Chapter 5

Summary, Conclusion and Recommendations: key findings, contribution to knowledge, limitations, and recommendations for further research.
