Abstract

This project designs and constructs a GSM-based prepaid smart energy meter. The system measures consumption with a current and voltage sensing stage, deducts credit in real time, allows remote recharge via SMS, sends low-credit alerts and disconnects load automatically at zero balance — addressing estimated billing disputes and revenue loss for utilities. The study is organised into five chapters covering the introduction, review of related literature, system analysis and design, implementation and testing, and the summary, conclusion and recommendations.

Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background to the Study

This project designs and constructs a GSM-based prepaid smart energy meter. The system measures consumption with a current and voltage sensing stage, deducts credit in real time, allows remote recharge via SMS, sends low-credit alerts and disconnects load automatically at zero balance — addressing estimated billing disputes and revenue loss for utilities.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Builds a prepaid energy meter with GSM remote recharge, disconnection and consumption alerts. Existing approaches remain limited in reach, accuracy and ease of use, which creates the gap this study addresses.

1.3 Aim and Objectives

The aim of this study is to design and construction of a gsm-based prepaid smart energy meter. The specific objectives are to:

  1. review existing literature and systems related to the study;
  2. design and build the system using Arduino / PIC microcontroller, GSM module (SIM800), Current & voltage sensors;
  3. evaluate the results against the stated problem;
  4. make recommendations for practice and further research.

1.4 Scope of the Study

Introduction: background to prepaid smart metering, statement of the problem (estimated billing breeds disputes and revenue leakage for power utilities), aim and objectives, research questions, scope, significance of the study, and definition of terms.

Chapter Two: Literature Review

Literature Review: theoretical framework, review of related works on prepaid smart metering, gaps in existing studies, and a summary positioning this project. Literature Review: theoretical framework, review of related works on prepaid smart metering, gaps in existing studies, and a summary positioning this project.
